Kehinde Wiley – The World Stage: Israel

Just this Saturday night, Roberts & Tilton packed the house for the latest installment of Kehinde Wiley’s The World Stage series. Taking his signature brand of portraiture to Israel and the surrounding region, rife with tumultuous conflict and historical context, was a natural next step for the New York-based painter, as he continues his exploration of power and politics. Mostly large scale paintings from urban anthropologist and artist filled the spacious gallery and its multiple rooms with richly detailed works featuring youths assuming the poses of old renaissance paintings surrounded by the patterns, language, and imagery of Israel.

D*Face – Going Nowhere Fast

Last night, one of the hottest spots in Culver City was the opening of D*Face’s (featured) show Going Nowhere Fast at the Corey Helford Gallery. The next-level Lichtenstein inspired pieces combined with the sweet highly visible mural (covered) as well as his street intervention on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (covered) brought out his fans (new and old) in droves and led to brisk sales. The UK-based street artist did not disappoint with a well-rounded and versatile body of work including large-scale canvases, installation pieces, Flutter-dies, dissected book reconstructions, skatedeck crosses and more.

Martha Cooper: Remix

Saturday night, Martha Cooper (interviewed) launched a special group exhibition at LA’s Carmichael Gallery. If the upcoming Art In The Streets Exhibition at the MOCA is this year’s Superbowl for street & urban art, then consider this show the preceding playoffs. Many of the players in the monster retrospective made an appearance to pay homage to the godmother of street art photography. Cooper’s curated list of artists were asked to artistically reinterpret her iconic urban photographs and included AM favorites like Futura, Swoon, Jose Parla, Shepard Fairey, Barry McGee and Chris Stain. If you’re in town to catch the MOCA exhibition, this is an important stop that you should include on your trip.
