Streets / Preview: RETNA – “Street Cred” @ Pasadena Museum of Californian Art

On May 15th, the Pasadena Museum of California Art opens their doors to Street Cred, an exhibition celebrating the art of graffiti, be it in it’s basic form or as a formative tool in the current career and work of fine artists. Interestingly enough, the showing was conceived of before the current Art in the Streets exhibition but was scheduled further in the future and also includes some of the artists from the MOCA. With what looks to be mainly in-state artists, the list includes Michael Alvarez, ANGST, AXIS, Chaz Bojórquez, CODAK, CRAOLA, DASH 2000, Ekundayo, EYEONE, HASTE, Paul SKEPT Kanemitsu, Alex Kizu, KOFIE, MAN ONE, MEAR ONE, Juan Carlos Muñoz Hernandez, Jose Lopez, Erick Montenegro, Nicnak, PUSH, RISK, Jeff Soto, Evan Skrederstu, REVOK, SABER, SHANDU, Jesse Simon, SINER, ZES, and as you can see above – RETNA. The street calligraphist has starting painting one of the walls of the museum and AM was on hand to capture some snapshots for you courtesy of Brandon Shigeta....

Graffiti Vandalism Follows ‘Art in the Streets’ Show at MOCA in Little Tokyo

AitS Police have received complaints from downtown dwellers about an increase in vandalism they think is related to MOCA's upcoming "Art in the Streets" show at the Geffen Contemporary. It's not clear to us if residents and business owners have a problem with some of the clearly related murals that have gone up in the area or some of the tagging that has followed. But either way, it's all illegal, the LAPD's Jack Richter tells the Weekly. Come again? Yeah, even a mural that's going up on the actual Geffen in Little Tokyo would be verboten under city rules. ...

Kehinde Wiley - The World Stage: Israel

Just this Saturday night, Roberts & Tilton packed the house for the latest installment of Kehinde Wiley’s The World Stage series. Taking his signature brand of portraiture to Israel and the surrounding region, rife with tumultuous conflict and historical context, was a natural next step for the New York-based painter, as he continues his exploration of power and politics. Mostly large scale paintings from urban anthropologist and artist filled the spacious gallery and its multiple rooms with richly detailed works featuring youths assuming the poses of old renaissance paintings surrounded by the patterns, language, and imagery of Israel.

Money Tight, Museums Favor Their Own Works Over Traveling Shows

Metropolitan Museum of Art

When the recession forced museums to cut back on expensive loan shows a few years ago, some worried that it would hurt attendance: With great works from around the world replaced by stuff hauled up from storage rooms, would art lovers’ hearts still flutter? Now, though, many museum directors are finding virtue in necessity. Shows built largely from in-house collections have drawn well, they say, and curators are introducing the public to unsung treasures. “If the recession has compelled us as museums in this country to focus even more intensely than we have in the past on our collections, that’s a good thing,” said Glenn D. Lowry, the director of the Museum of Modern Art. “Because they’re our primary responsibility.” ...

Exhibition: Hell Hounds from the North @ Pretty Portal

PP
"Hell Hounds From The North" Base 23/ Morten Andersen Opening 25.03.2011, 19h Show: 25.03. - 29.04.2011

Pretty Portal Brunnenstr. 12 40223 Düsseldorf Phone: 0211-4161831-0 mail: hallo@prettyportal.de
At the first exhibition this year, Pretty Portal shows Morten Andersen and Base23, two artists who both tend to Urban Art. Morten Andersen attracted the public attention by using rhythmic forms and expressive, whirling colours. Base 23 hypnotized people creating characters, that remind of indian totems of the 23rd century. The vigorous and graphical pieces of Base 23 build a strong contrast to abstract works by Morten Andersen. As a result the visitors/viewers will experiece great tension caused by the confrontation of the both artists. ...
