New TV Shows Reviews: 666 Park Avenue, Elementary, Revolution

666 Park Avenue

I didn’t really know what to expect from this show, but it’s definitely more creepy than I thought. I have to admit, I’m not really into Horror movies or TV Shows (I didn’t dare to watch American Horror Story), so real Horror fans might have a different opinion about 666 Park Avenue.
The story is pretty simple: a young and naive couple is hired to manage the Drake residential hotel whose upscale owners are portrayed by Terry O’Quinn and Vanessa Williams. The Drake seems to be haunted and Terry O’Quinn might even be the devil himself, making contracts with the tenants that seem to get them killed eventually.

Verdict: Terry O’Quinn and Vanessa Williams are amazing! The story is interesting, but reminds a bit too much of The Shining and other “haunted house” shockers. I hope the development of all the characters (there are a lot of people living in the Drake) doesn’t fall flat because of the sheer amount of them.
The horror factor is high, but not even close to a show like American Horror Story. In 666 Park Avenue, you’ll get creepy ghosts, flickering lights, and weird dreams, but nothing that will shock you to the bones. In my opinion, that’s a good thing ;-D
So far, the ratings weren’t that great, but I hope that viewers will give the show a chance, because it has a lot of potential!

Elementary

Elementary is a new TV show based on the Sherlock Holmes novels by Arthur Conan Doyle. You don’t think that’s exciting? Well, I don’t either. There’s definitely a new approach to the material: the show is set in contemporary New York City, John Watson is actually Joan Watson, portrayed by Lucy Liu, but that doesn’t help the fact that this story is just sooo old.
The different criminal cases might be interesting, but the interaction between Holmes and Watson isn’t any different. The Holmes character isn’t any different at all. Well, he’s still Sherlock Holmes with all the quirks and strange behavior, but we already know Holmes, especially since that great show with Benedict Cumberbatch and not even the fact that Watson is female manages to revive the story.

Verdict: The show won’t last. Even if a whole season is ordered, I doubt it will get a second one.

Revolution

Revolution is probably the TV Show with the most interesting story:

Revolution takes place in a post-apocalyptic dystopian future. Fifteen years earlier, an unknown phenomenon disabled all technology dependent on electricity on the planet, ranging from computers and electronics to car engines, jet engines, and batteries. People were forced to adapt to a world without functioning technology. Due to the collapse of government and public order, many areas are ruled by warlords and militias. The series focuses on the Matheson family, who possess a special device (resembling a flash drive) that is the key to not only finding out what happened fifteen years ago, but also a possible way to reverse its effects. However, they must elude Sebastian Monroe the General and President of the Monroe Militia who wants to possess that power for himself.

Verdict: The setting is great. We have a Dystopian setting with dilapidated buildings and nature taking over the cities, which reminded me a bit of the “I am Legend” setting. People have to live without electricity, so many of them went to the countryside where they can grow their own food. The plot is pretty action packed, almost like a Western with old rifles and lots of Sword fighting. The characters are pretty stereotypical with Charlie being the impulsive (and annoying) teenager, Miles, the soldier who acts as if he doesn’t care about anyone etc., so the show doesn’t reach its full potential. Actually, it reminds me a lot of Terra Nova, and we all know what happened to TN. It was already announced that Revolution will get a full season and I really hope that the characters develop some more in the next episodes. Revolution has the potential to become one of the best shows!
