In no particular order:
Ryu – I did it to myself
One of my favourite rap songs from last year. I love the lyrics, they’re honest and authentic. I really love Ryu’s crew Get Busy Committtee, but I also wish he’d release a solo record!
The Naked & Famous – Punching in a Dream
I’ve discovered many great new bands in 2011 and The Naked and Famous are one of them. Their album “Passive me, aggressive you” is so great and you should all buy it!
Enter Shikari – Gandhi Mate, Gandhi
One of my favourite rock bands! I love these dudes, cause they perfectly mix rock music with electronic elements and their lyrics are pure social criticism. Their music is just very exciting and I can’t get enough of it. I was a big fan of their latest album “Common Dreads” and I can’t wait for their upcoming album “A flash flood of colours”!
Azealia Banks – 212
Azealia Banks is one of many great newcomers in 2011. 212 is such a great dance/rap song and this girl can’t only rap, but also sing. Rumour has it, that she’s working on her debut album with Paul Epworth (Adele, Florence & The Machine, Foster the People), so 2012 is gonna be her year!
Coldplay – Paradise
I hate Coldplay so much! I really hate Chris Martin’s voice because it’s so whiny, but somehow I can’t get enough of this song. I also really like their collaboration with Rihanna, a song called “Princess of China”.
Laura Marling – Don’t ask me why
Laura Marling is one of my all-time favourite singers. Her voice is pure bliss and I love her poetic lyrics. “Don’t ask me why” is my favourite song from her record “A creature I don’t know”.
Rebecca Ferguson – Shoulder to shoulder
Another great discovery in 2011! Rebecca Ferguson is one of the greatest singers I’ve ever heard and her debut album “Heaven” is really good. I hope we’ll her much more from her in the years to come!
Get Busy Committee – Open Ceremony
Another great track released in 2011 is GBC’s “Opening Ceremony”. The song is pure fun and it accompanied me quite often when I was on my way to university. Unfortunately the future doesn’t look so bright for the rap crew as Ryu mentioned on Twitter that they have “one foot in the grave”. Maybe they’ll work out their problems, whatever they are, and release their sophomore album in 2012. As I said already, I’d also be okay, if we’d get a Ryu solo album ;-D.
Other favourite songs are:
Korn – Narcissistic Cannibal
Lana del Rey – Off to the races
Florence & The Machine – Never let me go
Tyler, The Creator – Yonkers
The White Lies – Strangers
Jay-Z & Kanye West – That’s my bitch
Lykke Li – I follow rivers
Adele – Someone like you
Linkin Park – Burning in the skies
