SASHA GREY, PHOTOGRAPHER

Photo from Sasha Grey’s new book of photographs, Neü Sex (Vice Books, $30)

Porn star and all-around Renaissance talent Sasha Grey launched her new photography book, Neü Sex (Vice Books, $30), at Martha Otero Gallery in Los Angeles with back-to-back book signings this week, one for the A-listers and a second for the fans. Celebrities in attendance included Adrien Grenier, who worked with Grey in Entourage, and Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan, as well as lesser lights, who can be spotted in the Patrick McMullan photo shoot. "She’s brilliant," exclaimed Otero, who was prompted to hold the book-signings in her two-year-old gallery by comic artist James Jean, who had just had a show there. "She knows exactly what she wants," Otero went on, "and is the kind of person who would be good at anything she wanted to do."...

A Conversation with Josh Vanover

Born and raised in North Carolina, designer/illustrator Josh Vanover has established a dense and foreboding visual language. Often working in black and white, Vanover masterfully fuses hand-drawn elements with stark photographic source materials. He is an unfettered manipulator of original and found imagery; his style informed by an encyclopedic knowledge of visual sources ranging from cult film footage, erotica and video stills to cartoons, war photography and even psychedelia. Vanover’s signature style and workman-like approach have attracted the attention of clients such as Nike, Stussy and Hennessy, and mostly recently having done album artwork for the likes of Linkin Park.
Los Angeles… is a beautiful place, I really dig the whole scene. So much history and culture in LA, it’s overwhelming. I love the vibe… you feel like you could see anything at anytime – good or bad. Me being born and raised in North Carolina coming out to LA is like visiting another planet. LA is where the magic happens right? Where people come to live the dream and where the dreams die. These are the streets that Bukowski walked, this is where Sam Cooke got shot up, and on and on. No other place like it on Earth. I get a lot of LA love, way more than any where else, not sure why but the feeling is mutual....

Streets / Preview: RETNA – “Street Cred” @ Pasadena Museum of Californian Art

On May 15th, the Pasadena Museum of California Art opens their doors to Street Cred, an exhibition celebrating the art of graffiti, be it in it’s basic form or as a formative tool in the current career and work of fine artists. Interestingly enough, the showing was conceived of before the current Art in the Streets exhibition but was scheduled further in the future and also includes some of the artists from the MOCA. With what looks to be mainly in-state artists, the list includes Michael Alvarez, ANGST, AXIS, Chaz Bojórquez, CODAK, CRAOLA, DASH 2000, Ekundayo, EYEONE, HASTE, Paul SKEPT Kanemitsu, Alex Kizu, KOFIE, MAN ONE, MEAR ONE, Juan Carlos Muñoz Hernandez, Jose Lopez, Erick Montenegro, Nicnak, PUSH, RISK, Jeff Soto, Evan Skrederstu, REVOK, SABER, SHANDU, Jesse Simon, SINER, ZES, and as you can see above – RETNA. The street calligraphist has starting painting one of the walls of the museum and AM was on hand to capture some snapshots for you courtesy of Brandon Shigeta....

REVOK News: Reasons For His Arrest And How To Support Him

The Real Reason Revok Was Arrested

Melrose & Fairfax posted a very interesting article. The "Revok-Case" is pretty weird with him being arrested only a week after "Art in the streets" opened at MOCA and the high bail amount, etc. so I wouldn't be surprised if their accusations against the LAPD are true.
The trumped up charges against Revok have reeked of suspicion ever since his arrest. From nabbing Revok in the first place for a parole violation and not a new crime, to the exorbitant $320,000 bail, to be sentenced to half a year in jail a day after the arrest, the whole thing seemed like there was something bigger going on. The LAPD were clearly looking for someone to make an example of doing graffiti outside MOCA. But when they hadn't made an arrest on the streets after the first week, they wanted a high profile name to take down. There was probably a short list of high profile arrests, so short, there was probably only one name on it--Revok. Read more after the jump!...
