Risk and Retna Secretly Paint a Santa Monica House for Heal the Bay

Shannon Cottrell

In 2008, a deco-style fortress built in the '50s and originally belonging to a prominent family in Santa Monica fell into foreclosure in the middle of an extensive renovation. Until three months ago it stood vacant, an eerie house on a bluff with a homeless woman squatting the top floor. The terraced gardens in back had overgrown and were infested with rats. The neighbors on this otherwise upscale block wondered and complained. Then came Adam Corlin, with a cause, a dare, and an endless supply of tarps. Corlin, a successful builder and a fourth generation Santa Monica resident, had his eye on this property, and when the price dropped to 50 percent of its original asking price, he jumped at the opportunity to own it. But this was no ordinary flip -- Corlin had some time in his hacienda rehab schedule and wanted to raise awareness for his favorite charity, Heal the Bay, the environmental group working to restore Santa Monica Bay. In speaking to the organization, he knew it had to be different than the usual donation or doing volunteer work. He had a blank house in Santa Monica, he had resources to do something big, and he had just met a graf artist appropriately named Risk. ...

Streets / Preview: RETNA – “Street Cred” @ Pasadena Museum of Californian Art

On May 15th, the Pasadena Museum of California Art opens their doors to Street Cred, an exhibition celebrating the art of graffiti, be it in it’s basic form or as a formative tool in the current career and work of fine artists. Interestingly enough, the showing was conceived of before the current Art in the Streets exhibition but was scheduled further in the future and also includes some of the artists from the MOCA. With what looks to be mainly in-state artists, the list includes Michael Alvarez, ANGST, AXIS, Chaz Bojórquez, CODAK, CRAOLA, DASH 2000, Ekundayo, EYEONE, HASTE, Paul SKEPT Kanemitsu, Alex Kizu, KOFIE, MAN ONE, MEAR ONE, Juan Carlos Muñoz Hernandez, Jose Lopez, Erick Montenegro, Nicnak, PUSH, RISK, Jeff Soto, Evan Skrederstu, REVOK, SABER, SHANDU, Jesse Simon, SINER, ZES, and as you can see above – RETNA. The street calligraphist has starting painting one of the walls of the museum and AM was on hand to capture some snapshots for you courtesy of Brandon Shigeta....

Mural on Fairfax “Accidentally” Buffed

BG Image via Melrose & Fairfax Twitter was abuzz when news were spread that a mural done by celebrated artists Retna, Rime, Revok, Norm, Saber, and Os Gêmeos was partially painted over by workers from Graffiti Control Systems. Fortunately the process was stopped by the owner of the building before the piece was covered completely. The whitewash was stripped and the piece can be restored. Graffiti and Street Art are probably the most controversial forms of art with artists being in conflict with the governments constantly. Many incredible pieces by exceptional artists have already been buffed, one of the most famous being Sabers LA River piece. It's time that the authorities realise how valuable those art works are and thank the artists instead of constantly destroying their work! Saber has posted a very interesting blog post written by Piper Severance about the incident:...

Exhibition: INLE at 1988

Thanks to Alex Pardee's Facebook, I've found this! What an amazing art show! Just the idea to make an exhibition about the Black rabbit of Inle, a character of Richard Adam's "Watership Down", is pure brilliancy! Then look at the list of artists. We have Alex Pardee, Ron English, Linkin Park's Joe Hahn, Jersey Joe Rime, Revok, Retna, Dave Flores ATC, Jeff Soto, Dan May, Tony Curanaj, Pete Wentz, Travie McCoy, etc. This show just has to be good! EDIT: As the opening was yesterday, I will try to find some more pictures and post them here. Gallery 1988 posted already two contributions on their blog. This one is from curator Greg Simkins:...

Best Art Basel Miami Artists

This is the week that the entire art world descends on South Florida for the annual art fair/excuse to party that is Miami Art Basel. It, and its satellite shows, are the premiere place to see — and buy, maybe — new work from established and emerging artists represented by galleries from around the world. We asked David Wilfert — the editor of art, style, and culture Website The World's Best Ever — to give us the rundown on the five artists everyone should be checking for during and after the fairs:

1. George Condo

It seems that everywhere you look these days you see work by George Condo, and Art Basel is no exception. Six galleries in total are showing the work of this New York-based artist. Thanks in part to Kanye West having the good taste to select him as the cover artist for his most recent album, alongside collaborations with Supreme and Adam Kimmel, plus an upcoming 25 year retrospective at the New Museum, the painter and sculptor is definitely having a moment. All of these facts just lead to one revelation: Forget about buying a condo — buy a Condo.
