Street Cred @ Pasadena Museum of California Art
The Pasadena Museum of California Art is currently hosting an exhibition dedicated to Los Angeles’ own street art movement. Entitled, “Street Cred: Graffiti Art from Concrete to Canvas”, the display features the work of various artists who represent a broad range of genres within the community, from letter-based formalism to Surrealism. Co-curated by Steve Grody and PMCA’s Exhibition Manager Shirlae Cheng-Lifshin, the exhibit includes several of Grody’s photographs from the crucial years of the graffiti scene and features the work of many prominent street artists including ANGST, DASH 2000, Alex Kizu, Jose Lopez, PUSH, RISK, Jeff Soto, RETNA and more. “Street Cred: Graffiti Art from Concrete to Canvas” will be on display from May 15 to September 4.

Streets / Preview: RETNA – “Street Cred” @ Pasadena Museum of Californian Art
On May 15th, the
Pasadena Museum of California Art opens their doors to Street Cred, an exhibition celebrating the art of graffiti, be it in it’s basic form or as a formative tool in the current career and work of fine artists. Interestingly enough, the showing was conceived of before the current
Art in the Streets exhibition but was scheduled further in the future and also includes some of the artists from the MOCA. With what looks to be mainly in-state artists, the list includes Michael Alvarez, ANGST, AXIS, Chaz Bojórquez, CODAK, CRAOLA, DASH 2000, Ekundayo, EYEONE, HASTE, Paul SKEPT Kanemitsu, Alex Kizu, KOFIE, MAN ONE, MEAR ONE, Juan Carlos Muñoz Hernandez, Jose Lopez, Erick Montenegro, Nicnak, PUSH, RISK, Jeff Soto, Evan Skrederstu, REVOK, SABER, SHANDU, Jesse Simon, SINER, ZES, and as you can see above –
RETNA. The street calligraphist has starting painting one of the walls of the museum and AM was on hand to capture some snapshots for you courtesy of Brandon Shigeta....
Mural on Fairfax “Accidentally” Buffed

Twitter was abuzz when news were spread that a mural done by celebrated artists Retna, Rime, Revok, Norm, Saber, and Os Gêmeos was partially painted over by workers from Graffiti Control Systems. Fortunately the process was stopped by the owner of the building before the piece was covered completely. The whitewash was stripped and the piece can be restored.
Graffiti and Street Art are probably the most controversial forms of art with artists being in conflict with the governments constantly. Many incredible pieces by exceptional artists have already been buffed, one of the most famous being
Sabers LA River piece. It's time that the authorities realise how valuable those art works are and thank the artists instead of constantly destroying their work!
Saber has posted a very interesting blog post written by Piper Severance about the incident:...
Best Art Basel Miami Artists
This is the week that the entire art world descends on South Florida for the annual art fair/excuse to party that is Miami Art Basel. It, and its satellite shows, are the premiere place to see — and buy, maybe — new work from established and emerging artists represented by galleries from around the world. We asked David Wilfert — the editor of art, style, and culture Website The World's Best Ever — to give us the rundown on the five artists everyone should be checking for during and after the fairs:
1. George Condo
It seems that everywhere you look these days you see work by George Condo, and Art Basel is no exception. Six galleries in total are showing the work of this New York-based artist. Thanks in part to Kanye West having the good taste to select him as the cover artist for his most recent album, alongside collaborations with Supreme and Adam Kimmel, plus an upcoming 25 year retrospective at the New Museum, the painter and sculptor is definitely having a moment. All of these facts just lead to one revelation: Forget about buying a condo — buy a Condo.
