Streets / Preview: RETNA – “Street Cred” @ Pasadena Museum of Californian Art

On May 15th, the Pasadena Museum of California Art opens their doors to Street Cred, an exhibition celebrating the art of graffiti, be it in it’s basic form or as a formative tool in the current career and work of fine artists. Interestingly enough, the showing was conceived of before the current Art in the Streets exhibition but was scheduled further in the future and also includes some of the artists from the MOCA. With what looks to be mainly in-state artists, the list includes Michael Alvarez, ANGST, AXIS, Chaz Bojórquez, CODAK, CRAOLA, DASH 2000, Ekundayo, EYEONE, HASTE, Paul SKEPT Kanemitsu, Alex Kizu, KOFIE, MAN ONE, MEAR ONE, Juan Carlos Muñoz Hernandez, Jose Lopez, Erick Montenegro, Nicnak, PUSH, RISK, Jeff Soto, Evan Skrederstu, REVOK, SABER, SHANDU, Jesse Simon, SINER, ZES, and as you can see above – RETNA. The street calligraphist has starting painting one of the walls of the museum and AM was on hand to capture some snapshots for you courtesy of Brandon Shigeta....

Mural on Fairfax “Accidentally” Buffed

BG Image via Melrose & Fairfax Twitter was abuzz when news were spread that a mural done by celebrated artists Retna, Rime, Revok, Norm, Saber, and Os Gêmeos was partially painted over by workers from Graffiti Control Systems. Fortunately the process was stopped by the owner of the building before the piece was covered completely. The whitewash was stripped and the piece can be restored. Graffiti and Street Art are probably the most controversial forms of art with artists being in conflict with the governments constantly. Many incredible pieces by exceptional artists have already been buffed, one of the most famous being Sabers LA River piece. It's time that the authorities realise how valuable those art works are and thank the artists instead of constantly destroying their work! Saber has posted a very interesting blog post written by Piper Severance about the incident:...

Special Art Post #6: SABER

SaberAM

Name: Saber Genre: Graffiti, Fine Art Dates: Solo Show in Mid May at Opera Gallery (More infos coming when released) Website Blog Twitter Facebook YouTube Channel Known Gallery Artist Page

It's been a long time since I've posted my last "Special Art Post" about Willie T., so I think it's time for another one. I've decided to dedicate #6 to artists SABER, because he's one of the best graffiti artists, he completed the largest graffiti piece on the cement bank of Los Angeles River in 1997 (blood shedding included), he has probably the coolest website, and.... he's cool. Actually this is not really an easy post to do, because SABER has done so many art pieces throughout the years and there's tons of material on the web, including probably more interesting articles about him on bigger sites. So this post is more like a little introduction of SABER and a little summary of what you can find on the web about him. I strongly recommend to click your way though his website, blog and other pages, because there is way more stuff than I can post here. ...

TwitART #2

Here we go again! Some gems I've found in my "Twitter-Art-List-Timeline" the last days. Make sure to click on the links, because I only post one picture and often there are way more! Oh, and follow all these people if you have a Twitter, because they are awesome and many of them (like Revok, for example) post so much great stuff that it doesn't all fit into this tiny little blog post! And check out their blogs, subscribe to them etc., you know the deal, it's called SUPPORT! http://twitter.com/#!/TeddyTroops/status/17643970368643072 Cpt.Cracker http://twitter.com/#!/REVOK1/status/16166780296761344 Alex Olsen STEVE OLSON and ALEX OLSON | BOOM BOOM Opening December 18th, 2010 | Runs December 18th, 2010 - January 8th, 2011 Known Gallery 441 North Fairfax Ave Los Angeles, CA 90036 info@knowngallery.com http://twitter.com/#!/garybaseman/status/17635513326370816 ...
